Artist Talk With Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, Un-Portraits & Kentifrications: Talking to Ghosts

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Join us for an artist talk with SFAC Galleries exhibiting artist Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle! In this talk, Hinkle gives insight into her archival and long term practice of working with the unknown, the unnamed, and the unaccounted for. Through her studio investigations, called The Historical Present, she examines how the residue of the past effects our present and future state if left unresolved.

Hinkle states “I am always haunted by the wise words of my great, great Uncle Tony when a family heirloom was lost. He said ‘You got to look where it ain’t.’ Looking where it ain’t has taken my practice into various research institutions such as the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles and The Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York. Archives are important tools within my practice for unearthing stories and perspectives that do not get told. I make work that allows the dead to talk.”

Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle's solo exhibition The Retrieval is on view at the SFAC Main Gallery from February 16-April 7, 2018. The gallery is open Tuesday-Saturday 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
