ArtHaus presents PORTRAITS and DIGRESSIONS
An exhibition of select paintings by San Francisco artist Paul Morin
San Francisco…ArtHaus Gallerists James Bacchi and Annette Schutz are pleased to announce the opening of PORTRAITS and DIGRESSIONS, an exhibition of select paintings by San Francisco artist Paul Morin at ArtHaus (project gallery) on July 7, 2016. A reception for the artist will unveil the show, 6-8pm.
A “Contemporary Realist,” Paul combines a traditional technique with a modern sensibility – images that confront the viewer and with a sense of scale that is very individual. Morin’s paintings emphasize character. By capturing the unique look and expression of each sitter, Paul delves into the personality of his subjects much like a candid snapshot reveals the moment-specific projection of a person's inner thoughts. His portraiture brings an immediacy to his subjects revealing an inner life that truly makes his subject “come alive!”
This current body of work in oil and silver metal leaf attempts to find a language that is both ancient and modern -- portraiture for the 21st century. According to the artist, “metal leaf connotes religious iconography, and silver harkens to the early days of photography (silver nitrate) and the "silver screen" of 20th century America. The images are vintage, yet contemporary. While the faces confront, the backgrounds glow like a light that could be sacred and otherworldly or secular and garish. Is it a background? A window? A sky? -- Viewer’s choice. Now, move around the room. The silver will pick up the ambient light and reflect it back to you. Stare into the figure's eyes. As otherworldly as the light around the figure is, the soul of the figure still dominates.
Paul Morin’s paintings are included in several public and private collections around the world. The artist’s portrait of Barack Obama titled “Profile in Hope,” was presented to the president in the Oval Office in 2010.
Also on exhibit at ArtHaus (main gallery), SURF & TURF, a group exhibition of environmentally inspired works in various media by Gallery and Guest Artists. Featured Artists include; Brian Blood, Carolyn Meyer, Deborah Brown, Michal Venera, Thea Schrack, Matthew Frederick, Donna McGinnis and John Wood.
