Around the World in 30 Instruments: Afternoon Lecture Recital

Around the World in 30 Instruments is a multi-cultural educational concert presenting traditional music from Ireland, Scotland, England, Medieval and Renaissance Europe, the Americas and India. Hear over 30 instruments including hammered and mountain dulcimer, mandolin, mandola, bouzouki, Medieval and Renaissance woodwinds, recorders, tinwhistles, banjo, North Indian sitar, Medieval psaltery, the Andean charango, Irish bodhran, African doumbek, spoons and vocals.

Four Shillings Short is the husband-wife duo of Aodh Og O'Tuama, from Cork, Ireland, and Christy Martin, from San Diego, California. They play a variety of musical styles from around the world and have been touring since 1997.

Aodh Og O'Tuama grew up in a family of poets, musicians and writers. He received his degree in music from University College Cork, Ireland and a Fellowship at Stanford University in Early Music and Performance Practice. He sings in English, Gaelic and French.

Christy Martin grew up in a family of musicians and dancers. Beginning at the age of 15, she studied North Indian sitar with a student of master Ravi Shankar for ten years. She studied classical music at Santa Barbara City College and with private teachers on a variety of instruments like the dulcimer, mandola, bouzouki, bodhran, charango and others. She sings in English, Irish, Spanish and Sanskrit.

Partially funded by the Maimonides Fund at the Jewish Community Federation & Endowment Fund of San Francisco, The Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties.

The OFJCC provides door-to-door rides for mobility-impaired seniors to all Community Tuesday lectures and concerts. The price is $10 for a round trip. All reservations must be made by Thursday morning the week before the event. To make a reservation, contact Betty Saad at [email protected] or (650) 223-8741. Funded by the Senior Mobility Initiative at the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund.
