Anna Shteynshleyger occupies a position at the confluence of many identities: Russian, immigrant to America, secular individual, orthodox Jew, artist, and others. Her intensely personal images explore the complexities of contemporary identity and go far beyond documenting any single community and its struggles. Shteynshleyger was born in Moscow in 1977 and has lived in the United States since 1992. She has had solo exhibitions at The Renaissance Society, University of Chicago; Dvir Gallery, Tel Aviv; Moti Hasson Gallery, New York; and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
