Andy Clausen

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Lou's Village (see times)
Andy Clausen is a New York-based trombonist and composer, an avid explorer of cross-genre territory, drawing inspiration from folk music, jazz, classical, and indie rock. An active bandleader since the age of 14, Clausen is a part of 4 active music projects, and has released two albums of original music to critical acclaim. The New York Times has described his work as “sleek, dynamic large-group jazz, a whirl of dark-hued harmony and billowing rhythm…The intelligent sheen of Mr. Clausen’s writing was as striking as the composure of his peers…It was impressive, and not just by the yardstick of their age.”

Hailing from Seattle, Clausen was the recipient of the 2009 Gerald Wilson Award for Jazz Composition from the Monterey Jazz Festival; as well as The 2010 Emerging Artist of The Year Award, and the 2011 Alternative Jazz Group of the Year Award from the Earshot Jazz Festival. Arriving in New York City in the fall of 2010, Clausen began his studies at the Juilliard School, where he has worked with the likes of Curtis Fuller, Benny Golson, John Clayton, John Faddis, Joe Lovano and Wycliffe Gordon, and studied under Conrad Herwig, Steve Turre, Frank Kimbrough and Dr. Kendall Briggs. He has performed with new music mavericks Bill Frisell and Wayne Horvitz, pop sensation Feist and the avant-jazz saxophonist Andrew D’angelo. Clausen’s compositions have been performed by Wynton Marsalis and recorded by Cuong Vu.
