GERSHWIN Rhapsody in Blue (with The Marcus Roberts Trio)
Whether you're an armchair classical music expert, jazz aficionado, or music enthusiast attending your first Berkeley Symphony concert, this eclectic fusion of music is for you! Barber's Essay for Orchestra No. 2 premiered at Carnegie Hall in 1942, dedicated to American poet and Berkeley resident, Robert Horan. Johnson's "Yamekraw: A Negro Rhapsody" drew inspiration from the culture of Yamacraw, a black neighborhood in Savannah, Georgia. Peter S. Shin wrote "Relapse" during a period in which he began educating himself on the collective origins of Asian America and striving for a deeper understanding of his Korean ancestry, which The San Francisco Chronicle acclaimed "brusque and fascinating." Finally, Gershwin's iconic "Rhapsody in Blue" celebrates its 100th anniversary this season.
