Art and Entanglement
What is art? Why does it matter to us? What does the fact that it matters tell us about ourselves? Alva Noë’s lecture approaches these fundamental questions by looking at the complicated ways in which life and art find themselves entangled. Noë is a writer and a philosopher who works on the nature of mind and human experience. He is the author of Action in Perception (2004); Out of Our Heads (2009); and Varieties of Presence (2012). The central idea of these books is that consciousness is not something that happens inside us, or to us. It is something we do. Noë’s latest book on art and human nature, Strange Tools, was released by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 2015. Noë is a 2012 recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and he has recently been named a winner of the Judd/Hume Prize in Advanced Visual Studies.
