SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Contra Costa Civic Theatre (see times)
Sep 21-Oct 21; no performance on September 22. Fridays/Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm, plus Sunday 9/23 at 7pm.

Contra Costa Civic Theatre (CCCT) presents its season-opening production, Allegiance, directed by Lily Tung Crystal, with music direction by Kenji Higashihama and choreography by Allison Paraiso. This musical about the World War II experiences of Japanese-Americans in the US, with book by Marc Acito, Jay Kuo, and Lorenzo Thione, and music by Jay Kuo, makes its Bay Area premiere September 21 through October 21 at CCCT. For tickets and information visit the theatre's website at https://www.ccct.org or call 510.524.9012.

The company includes Vinh Nguyen as Sammy, Lindsay Hirata, Nick Rodrigues, Emma Onasch, Dennis Yen, Bryan Pangilinan, Doy Charnsupharindr, Joseph Alvarado, Pauli Amornkul, Juliet Evens, Marah Sotelo, Anne Kobori, Jomar Martinez, Melvign Badiola, Christopher Juan, Domonic Tracy, Edward Nattenberg, Nicole Ogata, Celeste Kamiya, and Alvin Castillo Bunales.

In 1942, ten weeks after Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing the involuntary removal and detention of West Coast residents of Japanese ancestry. In the next 6 months, approximately 122,000 men, women, and children were evacuated to one of the guarded relocation centers known as internment camps.

Nearly 70,000 of the evacuees were American citizens, including actor and activist George Takei, then 5 years old, and his family were interned at the camp at Tule Lake, California. Mr. Takei's remembrances of the camp form the basis for Allegiance, which tells the epic multi-generational tale of Sammy and Kei Kimura, a brother and sister with an intense bond that faces spectacular challenges when they choose opposing paths to save their family.

Single tickets range from $15 to $38, with discounts available for groups of 15 or more. All performances take place at CCCT's intimate and fully accessible theatre in the Flynn building located at 951 Pomona Avenue (cross street Moeser) in El Cerrito. Free parking is available in the adjoining lot.
