San Francisco Performances has a highly regarded record of introducing gifted musicians when they are on the brink of big careers. Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Alfredo Rodriguez definitely fits into this category. Rodriguez is an internationally acclaimed Cuban musician who, due to his formal training, is as proficient at playing classical music as he is his chosen genre.
In 2009 he emigrated from Cuba to Los Angeles with a suitcase full of music, a sweater and a pair of jeans after the legendary Quincy Jones heard him play and took him under his wing. Their partnership helped immensely in the start of Rodriguez's career.
Rodriguez signed with Detroit's jazz label Mack Avenue Records in 2011. His debut album, Sounds of Space-co-produced by the artist and Jones-was issued in 2012, winning wide critical acclaim and resulting in expansive touring opportunities. In the spring of 2014, Rodriguez, his trio, and notable guests issued The Invasion Parade (again co-produced with Jones), a collection of originals based on Cuban folk traditions as well as standards from his homeland.
Rodriguez's most recent album, Tocororo, was released in March of 2016. Named for the Cuban bird that dies of sadness if caged, for the artist it reflects: "...not only the desire for liberty, but the necessity of it...freedom, travel, and the cross-pollination of Cuban culture..." Guests on the album include Richard Bona, Ibrahim Maalouf and Ibeyi.
