Acción Latina presents 44th Annual Encuentro del Canto Popular with Alex Cuba
Saturday, December 6, 2025, 6:00pm-10:00pm
Brava Theater 2781 24th Street San Francisco, CA
Acción Latina presents the 44th Annual Encuentro del Canto Popular with the multiple Grammy-winning Cuban vocalist Alex Cuba at Brava Theater in San Francisco on Saturday, December 6, 2025. This annual musical and cultural celebration is a fundraiser for Acción Latina and will present an evening of music from Alex Cuba, the Afro-Peruvian sounds of Warango, Chicana rap from Diabbla, and DJ Lizzy al Toque from Chulita Vinyl Club.
Founded in 1987, Acción Latina is the Bay Area nonprofit organization that promotes cultural arts, community media, and civic engagement as a way of building healthy and empowered Latino communities.
Encuentro del Canto Popular was started in 1982 by volunteers from El Tecolote Newspaper out of solidarity with the "Nueva Canción" movement, inspired by Chilean poet Víctor Jara, which used music as a tool to fight political oppression in Central and South America. Over the years, Encuentro del Canto Popular has grown and evolved to embrace new sounds while staying true to its original message of unity and resistance.
This year's headliner is Alex Cuba, the prolific Cuban singer songwriter who won the 2010 "Best New Artist" Latin Grammy Award. His 2015 album, Healer, earned him the Latin Grammy for Best Singer-Songwriter Album and his 2021 album, Mendó, won the 2022 Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. From Artemisa, Cuba, Alex Cuba's music mixes traditional Cuban folk with North American soul and pop influences.
Warango, from Oakland, is based in Afro-Peruvian musical roots and led by dancer and composer Pierr Padilla (Peru), Javier Trujillo (Peru) on guitar, Kyla Danysh (USA) on violin, Pedro Rosales (Peru) on percussion, and Alex Farrell (USA) on bass. Andrea Cruz aka Diabbla is a Mexican-American artist based in San Francisco. Diabbla's unique style blends bilingual rap with R&B, jazz, and boom bap.
