Punk to the core, yet with audible influences from early heavy metal and surf rock, Agent Orange formed in Fullerton, California at the end of the 1970s with vocalist Mike Palm, bassist James Levesque and drummer Scott Miller. The first Agent Orange record, released in 1981 on Posh Boy records in the midst of Southern California's already hectic hardcore community, cemented their reputation as one one of the best skate-punk bands around the area.

Like Dead Kennedys, they incorporated surf guitar into the punk equation. And they defied pigeonholing enthusiastically: they were too slow and not angry enough for hardcore status, but they were far too raucous and angry for pop; they didn't manage to pack enough reverb to be considered true surf. Regardless, they were a major talent and a force of nature like a tough sonic surf tsunami that hit home with many disenfranchised punks, skaters, surfers and kids all over the nation. Agent Orange are still making waves all over concert and festival stages all over the world.
