AFS Hosted Students' International Bazaar 2019

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The International Bazaar and Cultural Exchange is a chance for our hosted students to showcase their country's culture. Each student (or groups from the same country) will be setting up a table designed to educate the greater AFS community about their country, customs, and culture.  We invite past, current, and future host families, students interested in studying abroad, returnees, volunteers and anyone else who is interested in learning about the experience AFS as seen through our students' eyes.  There will be samples of food representing these cultures as well as other items of interest from our hosted students’ countries. Most of all, our students will share their cultures and experiences with anyone interested in learning more about this amazing organization.
AFS is a 75-year-old organization that began after World War I, when ambulance drivers volunteered to bring back young men from the countries that had been on the losing side of the Great War, to be hosted by American families.  This was an attempt to heal wounds in a metaphorical sense, by exchanging cultures on a very intimate level.  The effort grew into AFS International, an organization that now boasts the second most volunteers in the world (after the Red Cross).  Our mission, working toward a more just and peaceful world, through intercultural learning and understanding, is particularly resonant today.
The Bay Area hosts about 30 high school students annually and sends the same number to countries around the world, to spend a semester or year abroad.  Our summer programs and 18+ programs assure that more people have access to these life-changing experiences, whether for just 4 weeks or an academic year, and whether you are a teen or in your senior years.
We welcome the chance to share our organizations’ current students and their experiences with the greater Bay Area community, and especially with Google employees, who truly embrace the value of  global community and in whose community space in San Francisco, our event will be taking place.
