Adam Fowler: Spectral Resolution

SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Brian Gross Fine Art (see times)
Brian Gross Fine Art is pleased to announce Spectral Resolution, an exhibition of cut paper drawing constructions by New York artist Adam Fowler, opening Saturday, March 3, with a reception for the artist from 4-6pm. In his latest body of work, Fowler has introduced color into his drawings, combining multiple tonalities to create complex visual rhythms. Spectral Resolution will be on view through April 28, 2018.

Created through an exacting and meditative process, Fowler’s drawings combine gestural improvisation with meticulous precision. Fowler begins each work by creating networks of graphite gestural lines on multiple sheets of paper. In Spectral Resolution, Fowler introduces color into his work through the use of colored papers, onto which the graphite lines have been drawn. The negative spaces between the lines are carefully cut away and are then combined to form his signature multi-dimensional, layered compositions.

In Spectral Resolution, Fowler continues to push the boundaries of drawing through his unique method of overlapping layers of cut paper to form dimensional reliefs. These works mark the first time Adam Fowler has used paper inked with color as his support. Playing with the saturation of his graphite gesture, Fowler modulates the tones and textural intensity of his marks. Fowler also varies the thickness of his lines with each gesture, informing the variations in density of the finished works. In his layering of different tones, textures and densities, Fowler infuses his works with added depth and complexity.

Adam Fowler was born in Fairfax, VA and received his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, in 2001. Fowler’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, including Remix: Selections from the International Collage Center in 2013 at the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, Sedalia, MO; Slash, Paper Under the Knife, an exhibition celebrating the one-year anniversary of the Museum of Arts and Design, NYC, in 2009; and in LineAge at The Drawing Center, NYC in 2005.

Fowler has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants including the New York Foundation for the Arts, Fellowship in Drawing in 2011; The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, New York, NY in 2007; and the Young Artist Program Grant, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, Washington, DC in 2004. His work can be found in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the U.S. This is Adam Fowler’s second exhibition with Brian Gross Fine Art.
