The concert will feature new collaborative works that Rohan has been working on, as well as the premiere of a contemporary, three-movement piece for solo mridangam. Drawing on traditional and experimental techniques and approaches, the piece reflects the rhythmic soundscapes of San Francisco, both musical and non-musical, and highlights the diverse rhythmic traditions that contribute to one of the most cosmopolitan music scenes in the world. The piece reflects inspiration from many iconic and lesser known locations in San Francisco, and the unique soundscapes that they evoke. This new work represents one of the first experimental, programmatic, and socially-inspired compositions for mridangam, thereby expanding the traditional Indian musical aesthetic and repertoire, and sounding a new perspective about life in San Francisco.
