About "Remember, Restructure, Recreate” Lecture:
Presented by the Chinese Culture Center, “Remember, Restructure, Recreate” is hosted by Dr. Austin Yip, HK Baptist University and Prof. Jack van Geem, ex-Principal Percussion of SF Symphony. This hour-long lecture with demonstration and conversation accompanies the 2019 SF International Arts Festival “Toolbox Percussion Mouvement v2 - Grant Avenue” 8:00pm Cowell Theatre, Fort Mason Center on June 1st.

Dr. Austin Yip
Sought-after composer Austin Yip’s works have been performed worldwide. His recent work, “Wind Quintet No.1: Eagle Eyes (2016)”, has been performed in Italy, Netherlands, UK, Thailand and Japan by various wind quintets; “Metamorphosis (2016)” was commissioned and premiered by the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and “String Quartet No.5: Time Motor” was premiered by the Mivos Quartet (US). Yip’s works are published by Donemus (Netherlands), ABRSM (UK), BabelScores (France), Ablaze Records (US), Navona Records (US), Hugo Production and Hong Kong Composers Guild. Yip is the holder of CASH Golden Sail Music Award 2017 with his orchestral work “Metamorphosis”. He was the founding chairman of Toolbox Percussion, and is currently a lecturer at the Hong Kong Baptist University.????
Professor Jack van Geem
Jack Van Geem retired as Principal Percussionist and Assistant Timpanist with the San Francisco Symphony in 2012, a position he held for 32 years. He is Chairman of Percussion Studies at San Francisco Conservatory where he has taught since 1991. He taught at The Colburn School in Los Angeles from 2006 to 2015. Having taught at nearly every ZMF event since 2001, Jack estimates that, all told, he has spent half a year of his life at ZMF! He also serves as its Vice President.
Van Geem began playing the marimba at age four. He studied percussion with Tony Cirone and Jerome Neff earning his Master of Arts degree from California State University at Hayward. He studied contemporary percussion performance with Cristoph Caskel in Germany in the mid-70s on a scholarship from the University of California at Berkeley. Following that, he was percussionist for the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra for five years until he won the SFS position.

About "??: A double listen?”:
"??: A double listen?” is a sound art installation exhibition featuring Toolbox Percussion previous works and collaborated composers: Samson Young, Ken Ueno, Fung Lam, Austin Yip, and hosted by the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco for the first time in the United States.
No piece of music is fully comprehended on one listen. ? ?
The mechanisms of creating percussive sound are so versatile that musicians or composer are far from fully exploring them. The exhibition titled “A double listen”, serving as a dossier, features many of these past aesthetic attempts from performances in a theatre setting: Lam Fung’s “Round” (2016), Austin Yip’s "Urban Construction” (2017), Ken Ueno’s “Mother of Fire” (2018) and Samson Young’s “Glass Chimes” (2019). These multiple endeavours, encompassing traits of quotidian pastime, literariness, metallurgy and engineering, were yet to be wholly unraveled if it is performed and perceived just once. Annotated with decorative embellishment, this exhibition avails one ineluctable gaze, or we phrase it “a second listen”, to anchor all the interconnecting knots in between seemingly separate pieces. ??
