LYRIC THEATRE OF SAN JOSE closes their 2017-2018 season with Johann Strauss Jr.'s rollicking comedy set during Venice's Carnival celebrations.
A Night in Venice is full of mistaken identity, sassy sopranos, and an ensemble cast of witty characters. Strauss adeptly paired the story with beautiful waltz themes that add emotional depth to the comedy. Performed in English, the opera makes a delightful night of entertainment for both new and seasoned opera patrons.
Director Michael Morris is passionate about the project. "I am very excited to be serving as the stage director for a new work at Lyric Theatre, especially this comic work by Johann Strauss, Jr. The music is gorgeous, which one would, of course, expect of Strauss, and the comedy reminds me of very early Vaudeville with a lot of one-liners, double entendre, and even some slapstick. The cast is exceptional, both as singers and actors. It is an honor to be working on this production!"
Music director and conductor Bruce Olstad joins Morris on the director team. They each have a keen ear for capturing comedy, and together they interpret Strauss's opera in a unique way, placing the power dynamics in the hands of the female characters. While traditional productions have relied on large-scale Carnival scenes to engage audiences, Lyric's presentation will focus on the intrigue.
Fully staged, in English, with supertitles, performed by accomplished singers from the entire Bay Area. Featuring LYRIC's excellent directors, orchestra, set designs and costumes.
In our 45th year of high quality live musical comedy productions.
Discounts available for Students, Seniors, and Groups.
