The famous Yogi Berra once remarked, “You can observe a lot by watching.” It’s a discovery that Tony Wheeler, co-founder of the Lonely Planet, has repeatedly found to ring true, particularly on his recent Silk Road odyssey: a three and a half month drive from Bangkok to London in an old English sports car. Along the way, Wheeler encountered young Chinese travelers who shared why their interest in the outside world is so important. Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia left him wondering if he was on the Mongolian steppes or instead in Switzerland or New Zealand. Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, looked like a converging of Pyongyang and Las Vegas. While the Iranians seemed to go out of their way to prove they’re the world’s friendliest people. There was a whole world waiting to be experienced.
Travel and discovery rest at the heart of Tony Wheeler’s life and career. He joins us for a discussion about exploration and the adventures that followed from a life of worldly travel.
As part of our "Engage" series, this event features a short, off-the-record post-discussion Q&A with the speaker and moderator.
