A Conduction (Conducted Improvisation Workshop with J.A. Deane (facilitated by Myra Melford)
J.A. Deane, longtime collaborator of Lawrence "Butch" Morris, will be on campus for the week of December 2-6, leading a workshop on "Conduction," the term Butch Morris used to describe his original process of conducting an ensemble of improvising musicians. The introductory session on Monday, December 2, is open to the public to attend. At this event, J.A. Deane will teach about the philosophy and practice of conducted improvisation, as well as teach ensemble comprised of students and Bay Area professional musicians, the cues for when/how to improvise. During the week, he'll hold daily evening rehearsals with the ensemble, which will then perform a concert for the public on Friday, December 6.
