Seva Foundation is a Berkeley based organization founded in 1978 by a group of medical professionals, counterculture activists, musicians and compassionate individuals, all dedicated to the prevention of blindness. Most notably among them are public health expert Dr. Larry Brilliant, spiritual leader Ram Dass, and humanitarian activist Wavy Gravy. In the past 37 years, Seva has restored eyesight for nearly 4 million people with programs reaching many of the poorest places in the world including: Bangladesh, Cambodia, Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet, India, Africa and Native American communities in the U.S. Today, Seva’s sight restoration programs serve one million people annually.
Wavy Gravy, originally known as Hugh Romney, became famous in the counter culture movement when he stood on the stage at Woodstock and announced...." What we have in mind is breakfast in bed for 400,000!" Over the past three + decades, Wavy’s primary focus has been Camp Winnarainbow, a circus and performing arts camp for children that he co-directs with his wife Jahanara and raising FUN’ds for Seva Foundation for which he is a founding board member. Wavy is also know as a Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavor. Through his good work on behalf of the planet and its least fortunate residents, Wavy Gravy has achieved his own brand of sainthood “Saint Misbehavin”, which is the title of the feature length documentary about his life, produced in 2009.
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros is an American indie folk band formed in Los Angeles in 2007. Led by lead vocalist Alex Ebert, the group features a revolving lineup of up to 12 people. The band's name is based on a story Ebert wrote about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe. Drawing from roots rock, folk, gospel, and psychedelic music, the band's image and sound evoke the hippie movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Their first album came out in 2009 and included the platinum selling song “Home”. Since then the band has recorded three albums and toured much of the world. They are known for the power of their live shows.
Steve Kimock is a master of improvisation, he’s been inspiring music fans with his transcendent guitar speak, voiced through electric, acoustic, lap and pedal steel guitars for nearly four decades. While one can say that his genre is rock, no one niche has ever confined him. Instead, through the years, he’s explored various sounds and styles based on what’s moved him at the time, whether it’s blues or jazz; funk or folk; psychedelic or boogie; gypsy or prog-rock; traditional American or world fusion. Threaded through this expansive and highly nuanced musical landscape is Kimock’s signature sound, the prodigious product of his ability to articulate crystal-clear tone, melody and emotion into intricately woven music crafted with technical brilliance. Steve will be joined by his friends Bobby Vega, Jeff Chimenti, Jay Lane and surprise guests.
The California Honeydrops don’t just play music—they throw parties. Led by dynamic vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Lech Wierzynski, and drawing on diverse musical influences from Bay Area R&B, funk, Southern soul, Delta blues, and New Orleans second-line, the Honeydrops bring vibrant energy and infectious dance-party vibes to their shows. They’ve taken the party all over the world: on 9 European tours, featured slots at such premiere festivals as Monterey Jazz, High Sierra, and Outside Lands, and recent performances supporting B.B. King, Dr. John, Buddy Guy, and Allen Toussaint. Whether in those high-profile performances or in more intimate venues where the band itself can leave the stage and get down on the dance floor, the California Honeydrops’ shared vision and purpose remain: to make the audience dance and sing.
Hot Buttered Rum is an acoustic jam-grass band made up of five best friends. The group’s onstage chemistry fuels the lovefest that is a live HBR show. Hot Buttered Rum’s years of touring have given the band the chance to work and play with a wide cross- section of musicians, including Phil Lesh, Chris Thile, Brett Dennen, and Robert Earl Keen. Seasoned veteran Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), acoustic guru Mike Marshall, and left-coast rocker Tim Bluhm have all produced studio albums for the band. Each has guided HBR towards the next step in its evolution. It’s a sound that’s as tough to describe as it is easy to love, and it has found its way to the most prestigious pop, folk, and bluegrass stages in the country.
All proceeds from the event will support Seva’s programs around the world!
