For the second consecutive summer, San Francisco plays host to a two-night tribute to all things lo-fi as 8bitLA and 8bitSF, the two biggest chiptune promotion groups on the west coast, join forces for Freq.Fest.SF v2.0.
Each evening features seven musical acts devoted to the craft of conjuring music from obsolete video game and computer hardware, all accompanied by live visual production. Artists are drawn from all up and down the west coast, with additional acts hailing from as far away as New York City and Calgary.
The festival will be held at DNA Lounge’s satellite venue, Codeword, on Folsom Street. Codeword itself will be closing down at the end of July, making this one of the last events to be held there in its tragically short tenure.
The lineup includes chiptune music of all genres, ranging from rock to techno to thrash to folk and everything in between, all with the guiding principle of summoning harmony with bleeps and bloops from retro video game sound chips.
