Four Barrel Coffee is pleased to present "7 Minutes in Heaven" by Courtney Sparks. In her latest collection of work, Sparks utilizes chalk pastels to create photorealistic still lifes of food juxtaposed with childlike scribbles and simple illustrative imagery. The show pays homage to the childhood game that brought out an uncontrolled excitement that one later learns is lust. As an adult, Sparks aims to evoke the same heavenly desire through her use of bright colors, pattern, and food. Setting aside the functional necessity of food, Courtney celebrates its potential to provide pure pleasure: the first bite of a perfectly ripe pear, the extra olives in a gin martini, or the joy in sharing a meal with great company. Food has the ability to ground a person while simultaneously taking them to a heightened state of bliss. Through an abundance of technical skill, creative compositions that make intelligent use of both negative space and the pieces' frames, and the childlike innocence sprinkled throughout, "7 Minutes in Heaven" offers the viewer a similarly joyous visual experience.
Courtney Sparks is an artist based in San Francisco, CA. She developed an interest in drawing at an early age, experimenting with different creative processes and mediums as she searched to find her niche. She began using chalk pastel while briefly studying fine arts in college in South Carolina. Since then, she has worked to incorporate her own technique of grinding down the pastels to form a dust, which she then applies to wood or paper using dry paint brushes. Using this method, as well as incorporating wild, childlike markings and images, she creates a detailed, dreamlike state within her work.
