The Bayview Opera House (BVOH) is the Bayview’s community cultural center. NOW Hunters Point, a project supported by Pacific Gas and Electric, activates a portion of the former Hunters Point Power Plant site with short-term events and community serving programs as part of an innovative site-maintenance and long-term visioning strategy. Together, on Sunday July 30th, the two organizations are delighted to present Bayview Hunters Point’s 6th annual Summer Circus Festival featuring Circus Bella and the Prescott Circus Theatre.
Doors to this free family-friendly event will open at 12pm and event goers will be able to enjoy a myriad of activities from hobnobbing with stilt walkers and eating treats from local food vendors to riding the giant Fun Slide and playing circus games. There will also be interactive activities that engage the public in conversations about the future of the site.
The Circus performance will begin at 1:45 pm, opening with the Prescott Circus Theatre, a non-profit organization aiming to empower and engage youth through circus and theater arts education. Prescott Circus Theatre, which offers circus instruction free of charge and almost exclusively to low-income children, will feature an exciting array of young performers.
Following the Prescott Circus Theater, Circus Bella, an open air contemporary circus that uplifts diverse audiences and engages community, will present their most recent production “Bay City Rhapsody.” This production translates the magic of daily city life into circus infused with the poetry, live music, and comedy using static trapeze, rope walking, a 9-person juggling act, contortion, hula hoop, original clowning, a live band playing originally composed music, and more.
“Bayview Opera House is super excited to present the 6th Annual Circus Festival, again in collaboration with NOW Hunters Point. Our partnerships throughout the community make it possible for us to extend our reach to parts of the Bayview Hunters Point community that lack adequate access to arts and culture. The arts have proven to be instrumental in developing creativity in our children, an essential survival skill in the 21st century job market,” says Barbara Ockel, Bayview Opera House’s executive director. “We appreciate PG&E’s continued support for bringing positive activities to the site of the former power plant.”
Allegra Madsen, Program Designer for NOW Hunters Point, adds “The Circus Festival is the most exhilarating event of the NOW Hunters Point summer season. We are excited to once again work with The Bayview Opera House, a pillar of the Bayview Hunters Point arts community, to produce this magical event that connects local residents to a fun, family-friendly cultural event. Last year we attracted over 1,500 youth and adults and furthered the work of transforming this industrial landscape into a dynamic activity center that can be a place for environmental resotration and community renewal.
