SEE EVENT DETAILS
The Arhoolie Foundation, the El Cerrito, CA-based non-profit organization dedicated to the documentation, preservation, and celebration of regional roots music, presents its 5th Annual Arhoolie Awards and Benefit Concert at The Chapel in San Francisco on Friday, April 14, 2023.

The Arhoolie Foundation will honor and award Tuba Skinny, Santiago Jimenez Jr, and Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton for the artistic contributions they have made to global music. This year's concert will include performances from Dave Alvin, Santiago Jiménez, Jr., and Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton. The Arhoolie Foundation Awards honor musicians, organizations, and individuals who carry on and uplift tradition-based music and the recipients are nominated by experts in the field and selected because of the extraordinary work they do to keep diverse roots and regional music thriving. The award is accompanied by a $10,000 prize.

Founded in 1960 by Chris Strachwitz, Arhoolie has become synonymous with blues, zydeco, Tejano, and other popular folk styles of the 20th century, influencing multiple generations of musicians across numerous genres. The label released historic albums by Mississippi Fred McDowell, Lightning Hopkins, Clifton Chenier, Big Mama Thorton, Mance Lipscomb, among countless other revered singers and musicians. The Arhoolie Foundation's mission is to document and celebrate blues, Cajun, zydeco, gospel, jazz, Tejano/Norteño, old-time and other tradition-based styles of music through archival preservation, exhibits, community and educational outreach, live performance, and direct support to artists.

From New Orleans, LA, Tuba Skinny is the world-class group that interprets traditional jazz, jug band music, spirituals, country blues, string band music, ragtime, and New Orleans R&B. The beloved Crescent City collective started out over a decade ago as show-stopping French Quarter street buskers and have since turned into one of New Orleans' greatest musical ambassadors, touring the world with their delicious, spirited takes on Depression-era blues, spirituals, ragtime and traditional jazz. Their approach is a true reflection of Americana, encompassing the full genealogy of popular American music.

Santiago Jiménez, Jr. is a member of the illustrious Jimenez family of accordion players and he has maintained the traditional style of Tejano conjunto for over 60 years. Faithful to the music of his father Don Santiago Jimenez, Santiago Jr. has been awarded a National Heritage Fellowship and a National Medal of Arts. A traditional music leader and teacher, Santiago Jimenez Jr. first recorded for Arhoolie in 1982 and has remained a friend ever since.

Although young multi-instrumentalist Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton has been legally blind since his teens, his ability to tap into traditional American music reveals a perceptiveness and focus that few others are able to achieve. A gifted multi-instrumentalist who specializes in traditional, pre-World War II music, Paxton plays the fiddle, banjo, guitar, harmonica, and piano, and his performances are filled with ballads, blues tunes, banjo tunes, fiddle tunes, rags, and more.

The Arhoolie Foundation Benefit Concert and Awards show will also feature a silent auction for rare Arhoolie items and other roots music gifts. Tickets are $45.00 in advance, $50.00 at the door, and VIP packages available for $150.00.

This year, at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Arhoolie will present Allons A Louisiana - 60 years of Arhoolie in Louisiana, an exhibit dedicated to Arhoolie and the State of Louisiana, and Foundation manager John Leopold will moderate a panel at JazzFest on May 5 with Quint Davis, Chris Strachwitz, CJ Chenier, Lars Edgran and New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Archivist Rachel Lyons. In October 2023, Chronicle Books will release Down Home Music: The Stories & Photographs of Chris Strachwitz from famed rock journalist Joel Selvin and Chris Strachwitz. The book is an extensive review of Chris's black and white photographs from the earliest days of his song catching for Arhoolie that documents the people and places that produced some of America's great vernacular music.
