420 Show: Sole, Jel, Paperbark, + more

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Sole
American MC and one of the eight co-founders of Anticon. Born in Portland, Maine in 1977, Sole put out his first demo in 1992, at age 15, and founded the label 45Below

In 1998, Sole co-founded Anticon Records with The Pedestrian, Alias (3), Dose One, Yoni Wolf, Jel, Odd Nosdam and Baillie Parker.

In 2010, Sole pulled his catalogue from Anticon and left the label, giving up his stake in the business. He founded Black Canyon Music as an umbrella imprint for his self-released music.

Sole has been a member of the groups Northern Exposure (2) (with Cuz The Highlander, 1994-5), Live Poets (with Cuz The Highlander & JD Walker, 1995-6), Deep Puddle Dynamics (with Alias, Doseone & Slug, 1998-9), Babylonians (with Pedestrian, 2001), Stuffed Animals (with Circus, Doseone, Pedestrian & Yoni Wolf, 2000-1), So Called Artists (with Alias & DJ Mayonnaise, 2000-1), Sole And The Skyrider Band (with Skyrider, 2006-present), and Waco Boyz (with Bleubird & K-the-I???, 2012). (Apr 2014)

Jel
While most hiphop kids fused puberty with rap, jel spent years 14 and 15 fueling tanks at a Chicago gas station, saving pennies for his trusty and still ticking SP1200 sampler. The drum machine's premier musician, jel's distinct few-bit sound and rhythmic sensibility render him coveted by vocalists far and wide. His frequent Chicago to Cincinnati sojourns to collaborate with doseone took a final turn when they removed themselves to California. This drum-thumbed producer's programmed textures unravel the genome of an anticon sound, if there ever was one.

OneWerd
For OneWerd, a rapper and producer from the SF Bay Area, the journey has always been about the music, and vice versa.
Hip Hop for the Bay Area emcee and producer began in the SF bay area amidst a haze of graffiti-based classroom scribbles, open-mic freestyle cyfers, and the peak of the mid 90’s underground scene.

Over the course of the last decade and a half, he has toured both coasts of the US, released 7 self-produced albums, collaborated with a plethora of underground names,
and maintained a monthly showcase of local and touring artists in SF’s SOMA district.

OneWerd’s music and production span a wide spectrum of topics and styles, ranging from abstract introspection over ethereal synths and layered drumwork,to breakneck-lyrical cadence over grinding bass textures. From the humorous, trap-based chronicles of life as the owner of a calculator watch,
to the technically layered lyricism of staying inspired in a steadily deteriorating industry, diversity of style is a key ingredient to Werd’s formula.

OneWerd has collaborated and shared the stage with Myka 9, Scarub, Aceyalone, 2Mex, Sapient, Gajah, LuckIam, Ceschi, Moodie Black, Brzowski, Bop Alloy, VerBs, Abstract Rude, Candlespit Collective, Adder, Spoken Nerd, and many more.
