SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (see times)
Friday, March 21st | 5-8PM
*Kid Happy Hour | 4-5PM
$5 General | $3 Seniors, Students and Kids | FREE for MAH Members & children under 3

Don’t judge a book by its cover-- Make a new one. Jump into Santa Cruz’s world of poetry and book arts with ongoing workshops and art activities. Transform the printed page into book art sculptures, envelopes, guerrilla art books and book mobiles.

Our classroom will be transformed into a paper-making mecca (with Peter and Donna Thomas, Frank Trueba, John Babcock, Bonnie Britton, and Matthew Cohen). Linda Stinchfield and Janina Larenas will teach you all about book binding, beginning with the Pamphlet-Stitch Booklets. Learn about the art of lettering with zentangle letter writing with Terry Spodick and Ruth Korch. Drip vibrant colors of ink with Connie Hunter and Linda Babcock in their paper marbling workshop. Learn how to use a pilot press broadside printer with Kate Hitt. Make tiny books with the Santa Cruz Public Library. Turn poems into pictures and pictures into poems in a workshop that blends words and art. Make gold leaf illuminated letters with Julie Rogge .

Poetry Santa Cruz has selected talented local poets for poetry readings in our auditorium and spontaneous slam poetry performances, organized by The Art Bar and Jasmine Schlafke, will pop up in our second floor gallery. Listen in as the spoken word inspires you to write some of your own poems throughout the museum in writing workshops with The Children’s Museum of Discovery and Santa Cruz Writes. Crawl into our book dome with a flashlight to create blackout poetry or write haikus about newspaper articles with Jim Jones.

*Don’t miss Kid Happy Hour 4-5PM with art activities geared for families with young children in the atrium. Participate in building an Alphabet Museum, give back to Shel Silverstein’s Giving Tree, get seussical by designing your very own Cat in the Hat whiskers, and experience the transformation of the Very Hungry Caterpillar by making your own fat furry friend in addition to a word winged butterfly.
