This is a art show of three different artists. Me, my mother, and my grandmother are all painters. My grandmother is Arline Butterfield. She spent her life writing fictional stories for The Valley Times. But she also painted surrealist imagery and other subjects. She studied with Mel Ramos. Her figurative work definitely shows his influence.
My mother is Allison Butterfield Modifer and she paints work that mesmerizes me. Right now she does her art and teaches classes in San Leandro. Her work reminds me of no-one I've seen in art history. On the surface, she paints a lot of flowers and landscapes. But the way she does it is both photorealistic and cubist. I don't get it. I don't get why I'm moved by her work but I am.
Then there is me, Colin Hurley. I paint. That's all I know. I also like filmmaking. I've been taught to appreciate the arts and therefore I do. This is a show where I hope to honor my family, but also a show that will show the world the greatness of my mother's art. She is my favorite artist.
