for a Celebratory 25th Anniversary Reception
Scott Nichols Gallery is pleased to present The 25th Anniversary Show, a special exhibition of photographs celebrating twenty-five years at 49 Geary. The exhibition will feature classic images by California photographers and contemporary photographs from the gallery's collection and past exhibitions, on view from Tuesday, November 7th through Friday, December 29th.
Scott Nichols opened the gallery to the public at 2pm on November 7th, 1992. It was a Saturday and to quote Scott, “The first show was 85 photographs of whatever I had that I could frame. We double hung every inch of the gallery with all vintage silver prints. Lange. The Westons. Tice. Cunningham. Bullock. Garnett. Kertesz. Penn. Bernhard. Caponigro. W. Eugene Smith. Abbott. Cartier-Bresson. It all started with an impulsive purchase of 16 Brett Weston prints. I was on a UC Berkeley class trip to Brett’s studio and he was offering $50 prints to the students and I bought all 16. At the same time, I was William Garnett’s assistant and the architectural slide library photographer at Berkeley. I needed 5 more credits to get my undergraduate architectural degree and my final class was a graduate course called photographing the architectural landscape. And that was the start. It’s hard to believe that 25 years has passed! This 25th anniversary exhibition will highlight all my years of collecting and dealing.”
Scott Nichols, a California native and UC Berkeley graduate, started as a private dealer in 1980. Since opening the gallery at 49 Geary in the fall of 1992, the gallery has mounted over two hundred exhibitions. The gallery houses one of the most sophisticated collections of f64 and California photography, specializing in Brett Weston, Ansel Adams, Ruth Bernhard, Wynn Bullock, Imogen Cunningham, William Garnett, Dorothea Lange, Edward Weston, and others.
