Paul McCartney Could Choose Levi’s Stadium Over Candlestick for Local Show

Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney could be close to scheduling an opening concert at the 49ers’ new Santa Clara stadium in early August, according to reports.

Reps for the iconic singer-songwriter toured Candlestick last month after Mayor Ed Lee personally invited him at Outside Lands last year to help send off stadium before its demolition. City officials found it fitting since the Beatles last performed at Candlestick in 1966.

However, Barrie Marshall, a promoter who works with McCartney, revealed that he also visited the 49ers new Levi’s Stadium and McCartney could potentially christen the new venue with an opening concert in August, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

49ers officials say national event promoter Live Nation, which has a financial ownership stake in McCartney’s management company, approached team executives about hosting a show. However, some city officials think the move goes deeper and it’s one more jab from the 49ers ownership after a stadium deal in San Francisco was not met with support.

It remains unclear whether Candlestick Park or Levi’s Stadium will ultimately secure the inevitably historic concert. Stay tuned for more details.
