2014 Left Coast Annual Juried Exhibition & 2013 LCA Awards Exhibition

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Sanchez Art Center invites all art lovers to come see the 2014 Left Coast Annual Juried Exhibition, on view from April 11 through May 18. Concurrently, the East Gallery presents the 2013 LCA Awards Exhibition, featuring Ellen Little and Lucy Traeger, the award recipients chosen by juror Lucinda Barnes in 2013.

The free opening reception is from 7 to 9 pm, Friday, April 11, with live music provided by Buffalo BBQ. Visitors may also help create felt finger puppets and lapel pins to celebrate that shy little beach bird, the snowy plover, in preparation for Earth Day on April 26.

The juror for Left Coast Annual this year is Jenny Gheith, assistant curator of painting and sculpture from San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Gheith previously served as program director for the Society for Contemporary Art and curatorial assistant at the Art Institute of Chicago, and has taught at the California College of the Arts and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

The Left Coast Annual was opened this year to include artists from Alaska as well as California, Oregon, and Washington. The result was 360 artists submitting 936 artworks, a new record. From these, juror Jenny Gheith has selected 47 artworks to exhibit. The public is invited to the free Juror’s Talk and Awards Presentation on Sunday, April 13 at 1 pm to learn about the jurying process and to hear juror Jenny Gheith and dialogue with artists about their work.

Both artists in the 2013 LCA Awards Exhibition like to work large. Ellen Little is a maven of the demanding art of watercolor painting. Her paintings have all the delicacy that transparent watercolors can bestow, despite their size. It’s a formidable combination. Lucy Traeger’s acrylic paintings focus on people and events from news media photographs. Traeger reworks these through the lens of her compassion and her indignation that we are inundated by tragic stories to the point of numbness. She aims to awaken and revitalize viewers and inspire them to take action.

Sanchez Art Center is located at 1220 Linda Mar Boulevard in Pacifica, 1.5 miles east of Highway 1. Following opening night, the galleries are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 1–5 pm and by appointment through May 18. For more information: 650-355-1894; sanchezartcenter.org.
