Help celebrate World Oceans Day by attending the 2014 Beneath the Waves Film Festival on Saturday, June 7th from 11-5pm at the Sanctuary Exploration Center, located at 35 Pacific Ave, just across from the Wharf, in Santa Cruz.
We will be screening over 30 student, amateur and professionally made short films (each under 15 minutes) in three different sessions (from 11-1, 1-3, and 3-5). Films focus on ocean ecology, conservation and marine science and include breathtaking underwater photography from far-away places like the Antarctic, the South Pacific, the Caribbean, the US east coast, and closer to home here in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
Guest speakers, including Sanctuary Superintendent Paul Michel, Gary Griggs Director of the UCSC Institute of Marine Sciences, Ivano Aiello from Moss Landing Marine Labs, and Dan Haifley from O'Neill Sea Odyssey, will introduce each session and lead interactive Q&A afterwards.
We will also have info and exhibits from local marine and coastal-related organizations; hands-on activities for kids and adults; live music; and art from local artists whose work is inspired by the ocean.
The film festival and activities are FREE and open to the general public.
