LEFT COAST GETS BIGGER
“2013 Left Coast Annual” at Sanchez Art Center

Pacifica, CA – The mission of Sanchez Art Center is to create community through art. To that end, admission in this year’s Left Coast Annual, the first of two annual juried art exhibitions at Sanchez Art Center, was opened up to include not only California artists, but Oregon and Washington artists, as well. A record-breaking number of entries flooded the competition. Out of the over 800 entries viewed, 50 works by 46 artists were carefully chosen by juror Lucinda Barnes. The result is an eclectic group of art pieces that make up the 2013 Left Coast Annual, on display at Sanchez Art Center between April 12 and May 19, 2013.

Perhaps another reason for the unprecedented response to the call for entries was the popularity of juror Lucinda Barnes. Ms. Barnes holds impressive credentials. She is Chief Curator and Director of Programs and Collections at University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. In addition, she has held an extraordinary array of curatorial positions at such esteemed institutions as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College, the Newport Harbor Art Museum (now the Orange County Museum of Art), and the University Art Museum, California State University, Long Beach.

While the diverse and wide-ranging art pieces of the 2013 Left Coast Annual will fill the Main and West galleries of Sanchez Art Center, the East Gallery is reserved for the exhibition award winners of last year’s exhibition. Juror Michael Schwager of Sonoma State University chose Jon Gariepy and Michael Acker to be featured in their own exhibitions in the East Gallery, which will also run through May 19.

The 2013 Left Coast Annual has gotten bigger in another way with expansion from the usual three galleries. The public is invited to visit “A Festival of Photography” in the Mildred Owen Concert Hall. This exhibit features the winners of the 2012 Fog Fest Photo Contest including Dottie Borba, Leah DeNola, Andrea Fisher, Corinne Gelhaye, Alan Grinberg, Edwin Hacking, Jeremy Jayson, and Brenda Simpson. The competition, coordinated by Sanchez Art Center and part of last year’s annual Fog Fest celebration, was judged by respected, award-winning Pacifican photographers (and Sanchez studio artists) Tanya Lin, Cynthia Rettig, and Michael Risenhoover (the newly voted Art Guild of Pacifica President). This exhibition runs from April 6 through Sunday, June 30, 2013, but will celebrate its opening on the same night as the 2013 Left Coast Annual.

But wait. There’s more! You, your family, and your friends are also invited to make art in the Mary Harris Room. Stop by and paint your own piece of the “Left on the Fence” art installation. When all the paintings are dry, they will be, literally, “Left on the Fence” bordering the sports fields. Thousands of travelers on Linda Mar Boulevard, as well visitors to Sanchez Art Center and the Pacifica Center for the Arts will enjoy your work and the results of the fun, beautiful, and curious things that can happen when a group of people get together and let their imaginations loose.

Opening night for this multi-faceted celebration of visual arts is Friday, April 12, 2013 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Sanchez Art Center, and it’s for all three exhibitions: the 2013 Left Coast Annual, the 2012 Left Coast Annual Exhibition Winners, and “A Festival of Photography.” Enjoy great art in four galleries, make your own art in the Mary Harris Room, and be entertained by Pacifica’s own fine pianist Michael Slaughter in the East Gallery. On Friday, May 3, at 7 p.m., Juror Lucinda Barnes will be on hand in the Main Gallery to offer her observations on the experience of jurying the 2013 Left Coast Annual. Like the festivities on opening night, this event is open to the public, and admission is free.

Sanchez Art Center is located at 1220 Linda Mar Boulevard in Pacifica, only one and a half miles east of Highway 1. Following opening night, the galleries are open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. through May 19, 2013, and by appointment. “A Festival of Photography” will be on display in the Mildred Owen Concert Hall through June 30, 2013, for concert attendees to appreciate during all performances.
