WHAT:
2013 Annual Medical Marijuana Emerald Cup
World’s only outdoor organic competition showcases the best Northern California marijuana and related crafts, products and technologies
After nine years at small – and sometimes secret – venues in Mendocino County, the one-of-a-kind Medical Marijuana Emerald Cup has blossomed into a full weekend-long event at the spacious Sonoma County Fairgrounds. Set for December 14 – 15, the 10th Annual Emerald Cup will showcase Northern California’s distinct medical marijuana community and bestow the coveted 2013 Emerald Cup to the winning medicinal cannabis.
Each year, the Emerald Cup has grown in popularity. The 2012 Emerald Cup was attended by more than 1,500 visitors, including growers, activists, scientists, attorneys and patients who gather to celebrate the year’s harvest and enjoy educational panels, live music, local arts and crafts and games.

MORE:
“As the acceptance of medical marijuana grows around the country, our event has outgrown its original digs in Mendocino,” said Tim Blake, Founder of the Emerald Cup. “Now in our 10th year, we expect more than 150 organic farmers to submit their entries and dozens more to showcase their locally-made crafts and cutting-edge technologies. It’s a welcome and rare opportunity for us farmers and cultivators to come together as a community to support each other, showcase our hard work, and advocate for more acceptance of medicinal cannabis.”
The Emerald Cup was founded by Tim Blake in 2003 to promote Northern California as the premier destination for medicinal marijuana while advancing the concept of sustainable, outdoor farming. The event is named for the area in Mendocino and Humboldt known as The Emerald Triangle, widely regarded for producing the world’s finest cannabis.
What started with a handful of nervous and somewhat illicit growers showcasing their medical cannabis has grown to hundreds of organic farmers who submit entries in the hopes of winning the coveted Emerald Cup, the first prize for medicinal marijuana. The medicine is judged by a panel of 12 judges – half of whom are long-term growers and half of whom are collective dispensary buyers – with 10 years of smoking experience each. The buds are judged on color, smell, Trichomes, crystals, taste, vibrancy and how it changes consciousness.
