Washed Out and Sold Out at Mezzanine on Friday
Ernest Greene, the man behind the chillwave name Washed Out, has officially gained notoriety—enough of it to be recognized for more than just his huge hit “Feel It All Around,” which many listeners heard the first time during the opening credits of Portlandia or as a favorite track on a playlist of summer 2010.
On Friday, May 4, Washed Out stops at Mezzanine, halfway through his two-month nationwide tour. The highly anticipated San Francisco show has been sold out for weeks.
Washed Out’s brand of DIY bedroom dream pop translates to the live stage as a five-piece band that includes Greene’s wife. By mixing live instruments with a synthesizer and electronic elements, Washed Out creates a live show that is more organic in sound than the recordings, a sort of translation that offers a unique experience to listeners and fans. The chillwave, ‘80s synth-pop-inspired yet refreshingly layered, lo-fi sound for which Greene and his band are known has earned Washed Out comparison to DIY pop leaders like Toro y Moi, Panda Bear and Neon Indian.
On Friday, Washed Out plays at Mezzanine with support from Memoryhouse, a light and breezy dream pop duo signed to the same label, Sub Pop.
