Preview: The Soft Moon at The New Parish
With The Soft Moon gaining exposure from national media outlets, it’s fitting that the San Francico-based post-punk band is on the same bill with another local breakout, Weekend.
The Soft Moon released a self-titled debut album in 2010, and with a 2011 EP Total Decay thrown in the mix, the band is gained nationwide exposure with mentions in Spin, Pitchfork and other media tastemakers. Their show on Feb. 1 at The New Parish with Weekend is a good opportunity to catch both bands in an intimate setting.
The Soft Moon produces a dark, atmospheric sound that echoes post-punk and shoegaze from the 80s. With emphasis on synth, accompanied by guitar and appropriately haunting, almost whispered vocals, The Soft Moon delivers more than an emulation of previous decades. Composed of Luis Vasquez (vocals, guitar and synth), Justin Anastasi on bass, Damon Way on the drum machine and synth, and Ron Robinson’s visuals, the band’s performances are a stimulating full-sensory experience.

The Soft Moon plays Wednesday, February 1 at The New Parish with support from Weekend. Doors open at 8pm and tickets are $12 – $15.
