Preview: Dave Nada at Lights Down Low

Lights Down Low kicks off a summer of loud parties this Friday night at SOM with a solid lineup of DJs including headliner Dave Nada, the creator of moombahton, a new genre taking the world by storm.

A little over a year ago, the genre moombahton was first getting it’s start among the DJ scene in Dave Nada’s hometown of Washington, DC. As a house DJ confronted with spinning his younger cousin’s reggaeton-styled school skip party, Nada began to ad lib. He slowed down popular Dutch house tracks to a reggaeton speed around 109 beats per minute so the kids would still dance, just to different instruments and vocals. The name moombahton is a mashup deriving from Afrojack’s remix of Silvio Ecomo & Chuckie’s “Moombah” track and the word “reggaeton” and is pronounced similarly.

Fast forward a year and moombahton has swept not only the nation but the entire world, with producers creating moombahton remixes as well as original tracks at a highly rapid pace. This past week Mad Decent Records released the album Blow Your Head Vol. 2: Dave Nada Presents Moombahton, a collection of 15 tracks from various producers defining as well as highlighting the genre, curated by Nada and including a couple of his own remixes as half of production duo Nadastrom. To stream tracks from the album and for more information see MadDecent.com.
