City Escape: Hiking Mount Tam to Stinson Beach

Spring appears to have arrived a tad bit early with all of these sunny days in January. If you’re itching to get out of the city for a little nature adventure, then a hike through Mount Tam to Stinson Beach should be included on your 2011 To-Do list. A spectacular landscape of lush redwood and oak forests, waterfalls, canyons and breathtaking ocean views is located just a quick drive North on one of the most scenic highways in the nation.

Matt Davis Trail (see Bay Area Hiker) is a bay area favorite and offers city dwellers a brush with Nature’s serene beauty. The 7.3 mile loop hike, which includes the Dipsea and Steep Ravine trails, leads to sweeping coastal views and some play time at Stinson Beach. While there are a couple fairly steep segments on the way up to Pantoll Ranger Station, the hike is moderate overall with long easy stretches and can be enjoyed by hikers of varying levels of experience.

Pack your own lunch to enjoy on the smooth sandy beach half way through the approx. 4 hour hike or opt for a sit down dining experience at one of the many local restaurants in Stinson Beach. Fair warning: you may be tempted to indulge in the soft serve ice cream at Parkside Snack Bar, but don’t get too stuffed before the hike up Steep Ravine where you must climb a waterfall via a 10 foot wooden ladder!

NOTE: Matt Davis Trail is currently closed until January 31st
