SEE EVENT DETAILS
April 10 at 6pm; April 13 at 8pm; April 14 at 3pm

CubaCaribe presents the 15th Annual CubaCaribe Festival, featuring a week full of of Caribbean dance, music, performance, dialogue and culture at two San Francisco venues, Brava Theater and Museum of the African Diaspora, April 10-14. CubaCaribe is highly acclaimed for being the only festival to present popular, contemporary and folkloric cultural expression, religion, history, and politics of the Afro-Caribbean Diaspora. This year the Festival will look beyond the well-known Afro and Timba forms to the lesser known Cuban social dances and their evolution over the years such as Danzon, Mambo, Chachacha, Son, Rumba and Conga. Shows will feature music performed live by Vission Latina Quartet. The 15th Annual CubaCaribe Festival featured performers and their traditions are: Danzon and Conga by Ramon Ramos Alayo; Son and ChaChaCha by Susana Arenas Pedroso and Arenas Dance Company; Mambo by Los Lupenos de San Jose; Rumba/Spanish Flamenco by Angel Yoel Mulen-Robert; Danzon and Rumba by Denmis Bain; and Rumba-influenced Spanish Flamenco by Carola Zertuche.

"Cuban dance has its roots in Europe and Africa and spans a wide variety of genres," explains CubaCaribe Co-Founder Ramon Ramos Alayo. "Through an exploration of some of these forms of dance, CubaCaribe will take the audience on a journey that began 500 years ago and still enlivens Cuba's dance halls, homes and streets today."

Also part of the Festival on April 10 is a special reception and artist talk, entitled,"Ajiaco en lienzo," with Visual Artist Pablo Soto Campoamor and Writer Jesus Francisco Sierra at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco.

Co-founded in 2003 by Ramos and visual artist and dancer Jamaica Itule on the principle that dance, music and visual art have the power to unite people of diverse perspectives, CubaCaribe fosters greater understanding and appreciation of Caribbean arts and culture.
