San Francisco’s Best Food Mashups

The cruffin is not alone – San Francisco’s food scene is big on adventurous mash-ups, from the dosa on waffles to sushi in burritos to pizza slathered in Nutella. While the combinations might not make perfect sense to many, for the food adventurous, these explorations in food are definitely worth a try.

Here are a few delicious options…

Chicken Liver Pate + Hamburger
STARBELLY, 583 16TH STREET, SAN FRANCISCO
A good mash-up is often a partnership of two classic and decadent dishes. A ‘secret’ item on Starbelly’s laid-back menu (one must request it especially), the “Doc’s Way” Burger, does exactly that, by pairing a Prather Ranch patty with rich chicken liver pâté and sweet onion marmalade. – $17

Tofu + Taco
KUNF FU TACOS, 59A SERRAMONTE CENTER, DALY CITY
The Daly City food truck loves on fusion and bold flavors, as well as unorthodox combinations. The fiery Tai-Chi Tofu taco, piled with spicy tofu, vegetables and guacamole, is good to vegetarians without losing its authenticity. – $3.50

Dosa + Waffles
JUHU BEACH CLUB, 5179 TELEGRAPH AVENUE, OAKLAND
The South-Indian rice flour bread meets the Belgian waffle, in a gluten-free triumph. The Dosswafles come with four different toppings – spicy chicken, masala potatoes, seasonal vegetables or Nutella and Banana and star on Beach Club’s inventive brunch menu. – $15-$18

Oysters + Toast
ALL SPICE, 648 BUSH STREET, SAN FRANCISCO
The second branch of San Mateo’s Michelin-starred All Spice goes all in with ‘sea toast’ – the ultimate fancy makeover for the humble piece of bread. The toast is topped with oysters, smoky eggplant spread, caviar and ‘tiny terrestrial and marine plants’ and looks like a work of art. – $16

Burrito + Sushi
SUSHIRRITO, 226 KEARNY STREET, SAN FRANCISCO
A long-standing local classic, Sushirrito’s premise is a straightforward, satisfying hit big with office workers. The hand-held, large sushi roll is shaped like a burrito, wrapped in foil for an authentic look and stuffed with classic sushi ingredients such as tobiko, shrimp tempura, chicken katsuand and wasabi mayo. – $9-$11

Pizza + Nutella
RAGAZZA, 311 DIVISADERO STREET, SAN FRANCISCO
Dessert pizza is hardly a novelty, but Ragazza’s Nutella Pizza, sprinkled with crumbled Amaretti cookies and dotted with soft white peaks of Mascarpone, is as comforting as it is surprising – and small enough to handle solo. – $9

Muffin + Scotch Egg
CRAFTSMAN AND WOLVES, 746 VALENCIA STREET, SAN FRANCISCO
The creative bakery is challenging the cruffin’s superiority with an Instagram favorite, ‘The Rebel Within’ – a brilliant mash-up of a muffin with a Scotch egg. The pastry may look like the everyday muffin on the outside, but the inside harbors asiago cheese, sausage, green onion and a miraculously runny soft- cooked egg. – $7

Bacon + Mochi
FUSEBOX, 2311A MAGNOLIA STREET, OAKLAND
No mash-up guide is complete without bacon. At Fusebox, the reservation-only West Oakland spot, everyone’s favorite ingredient is fused with another cult product – mochi, the glutinous Japanese rice cake. The result is smoky, chewy and instantly addicting. – $2.50
