Sea level in San Mateo County is rising. This puts the roads we use, the airports we depend on, and our neighborhoods at risk. Because of our unique location between the Bay and the Pacific, San Mateo County is the most vulnerable County in the state, with over 100,000 people at risk of the impacts of three feet of sea level rise by the end of the century. Look Ahead - San Mateo, is an innovative community engagement campaign utilizing 3D virtual reality technology, to increase public understanding of sea level rise and potential responses.
Look Ahead is hosting a free virtual reality viewing event and discussion on Saturday November 5th with local youth-run community organization, Heirs to Our Oceans. Members of San Mateo County’s staff will be in attendance to answer questions, hear concerns, and engage in conversation with youth around sea level rise and climate adaptation.

The campaign encourages direct involvement in San Mateo County’s sea level rise preparedness efforts, known as the Sea Change SMC program. The installation at Coyote Point Park will be open August through January 2017. Two Owls – a modernized version of a vista viewer - offer visitors a 3D panoramic tour of current and future flooding scenarios, current plans for the Park and potential responses for the region into the future.
OWLIZED technology is currently installed for free public use at Coyote Point Recreation Area, and this hosted event will give participants, and especially youth, the opportunity to engage in conversation with other youth and County decision makers.
