Yoga in the Bhagavad Gita w/ Dr. Edwin Bryant
November 15-17, 2019
Friday, 6:00-8:00pm
Saturday and Sunday, 2:00-6:30pm

This workshop will consist of an examination of yoga in the Bhagavad Gita, comparing it with that outlined in the Yoga Sutras. The Gita speaks of two types of yoga: action yoga, which it prioritizes and which includes karma yoga and bhakti yoga; and inaction yoga, which it calls jnana or samkhya, and which includes Patanjalian type practices. The workshop will focus on chapter 6 of the Gita, where Patanjalian type yoga is most clearly expressed, and where we will find concepts and vocabulary shared with those of the Yoga Sutras, and contrast this with yoga performed as karma or as bhakti. So the workshop will serve as a comparative analysis of these two pivotal texts that have become canonical for modern yoga. Students are advised to bring Winthrop Sargeant's version of the Gita with the Sanskrit text, as we will be using this version for the workshop.

Dr. Edwin Bryant is a professor of religions of India at Rutgers University. He has published eight books and authored a number of articles on Vedic history, yoga, and the Krishna tradition. He has lived in India in traditional contexts for several years where he studied Indian languages, Sanskrit and Indian philosophy, and where he returns every year to the medieval holy town of Vrindavan, sacred to Sri Krishna. In addition to his academic courses, Bryant currently teaches workshops at yoga studios and teacher training courses throughout the country. His lectures and workshop engagements include: The Bhagavad Gita, The Yoga Sutras, Indian Philosophy and Bhakti, and the Krishna Tradition.
