THIS EVENT HAS ENDED
Have you ever wanted to try yoga? Join experienced instructors from the Veterans Yoga Project for a free one hour class.

In this class you will learn breathing techniques that help you control your physical body and your emotions. We will move through a series of poses in English that are intended to help calm and center the mind. This practice meets weekly (but you may start any time and do not have to attend each week) and aims to give you tools to help create some ease in your life. We look forward to working with you to build a Veterans community that is supportive and meets you where you are each day.

Veterans participating in these programs have reported that they sleep better, concentrate and think more clearly, manage anger and aggression more easily, and find comfort in their own skin. Yoga may not cure posttraumatic stress disorder, but many veterans and active-duty individuals from all branches and eras of services find these practices to be a significant and necessary part of their recovery.

All props will be provided.

Veterans Yoga Project is an educational and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the health and well being of military veterans. Working in partnership with veterans, active-duty military personnel, student veterans organizations, and other non-profit organizations, Veterans Yoga Project supports recovery and promotes resilience among veterans, their families, and their communities. Veterans Yoga Project is a IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

Instructor Charlie Harrison, 200RYT Blue Sky Yoga : Yoga teaches us how to release struggle, heal from injuries, move through transitions and find ease in our bodies, hearts and minds. I teach yoga from a trauma informed perspective and am a 200RYT with special training through the Veteran’s Yoga Project. I have been teaching yoga to Vets for 2 years. My personal practice is fueled by exploration, curiosity and finding solutions. I bring those ideas to my classes by teaching students a variety of ways to work in a pose depending on how they are feeling at that moment. This is how yoga helps us learn to be mindful and be present. I respectfully and enthusiastically embrace the fact that each of us is different. Yoga is a personal practice rather than a competitive sport. We get on our mat for ourselves but we end up with a community. I teach for two reasons, because I believe in serving others and because it works.

Instructor Sarah McIntire, 200RYT Barefoot Movement: Sarah dabbled in yoga starting in high school, but started to delve deeper into her practice upon returning to her native Bay Area after college. In 2010 she earned her RYT 200 certification from Barefoot Movement in downtown Oakland, where she is also currently finishing her RYT 500 certification. Sarah teaches a Vinyasa Flow style, focusing on alignment and linking the poses through a deep connection to the breath and graceful transitions to create a powerful, meditative flow. Sarah strives to share her love of yoga as a tool for personal and social awareness, healthful living and longevity in a fun, supportive and inclusive atmosphere. Her classes focus on the fundamentals and building blocks of yoga while helping students foster self-compassion and learn ways to incorporate elements of yoga into their daily lives.
