Enjoy a screening of Yáa at Wooné: Respect for All Things, a short film created by the Herring Protectors to share the way of life and original instructions that are rooted to the herring in Lingít Aaní. The film takes viewers through five parts (the Herring, History, Harvest, Risk, and Ceremony) to show the importance of herring for thousands of years, the risks they currently face, and envision a way forward that centers Indigenous sovereignty.
Following the 20 minute film screening, participants will be able to join in conversation with K'asheechtlaa Louise Brady, founder of the Herring Protectors, and share in some traditional foods harvested in Sheet'ká Kwáan.
------------------------------------------------------------------
K'asheechtlaa Louise Brady is a woman of the Tlingit nation in Sheet'ká Kwáan, an island off the coast of Southeast Alaska. K'asheetchlaa is Raven-Frog or Kiks.ádi Clan. Kiks.ádi women are known as the Herring ladies and have original instruction that connects us spiritually, culturally, and historically to herring. K'asheechtlaa is the founder of the Herring Protectors, a grassroot movement of people that share concerns that the herring population in Sheet'ká Kwáan, and the culture tied to it, are under threat.
