MAJUB‘S JOURNEY

Directed by: Eva Knopf. Germany, 45 min., 2013

This documentary reconstructs the fate of Majub bin Adam Mohamed, born 1904 in Daressalam. During World War I, Majub and his father are part of the askari soldiers – the colonial protection force – fighting in East Africa against the British under General Lettow-Vorbeck. In 1929, Majub bin Adam Mohamed travels to Berlin, in order to demand his pay and a medal he earned as a front-line soldier. The agency denies his request, and he starts to work as a travelling performer and bit-part player during the Weimar Republic. Some of his roles include Zarah Leander’s driver, Hans Albers’ servant and Heinz Rühmann’s liftboy.
