Writing for the Screen: Story & Character: A Workshop with Alex Burger

This workshop meets on Sunday, April 15th, 10am-5pm (Story) and Sunday, April 22nd, 10am-5pm (Character). Single day registration available.
Screenwriting is the art form of the moment as fresh stories explode on our TVs, in cinemas, and online. Join this new wave of story-making and quickly learn how to go deeply into immersive worlds and stories that are character-driven, richly imagined, and socially relevant.
This two-part workshop focuses on finding and articulating your story and crafting characters that matter. Alex Burger provides a mixture of lecture, discussion, examples from film and TV, and class exercises. Participants leave with a clear articulation of their idea, an understanding of how to create meaningful characters, and a roadmap to help bring their story to life.
Part One – Story Story is a film or TV show’s most crucial essence: the reason we write, the guts that connect us to our audience. If plot is about what happens, story is about the underlying meaning of what we want to tell. Learn how to use a number of tools to find and construct a compelling story. Tools covered include story Venn diagrams, story triangles, story engines, ABC line plotting, and more.
Part Two – Character We return to film and television ultimately for the characters we come to love, hate, envy, and empathize with. How do you create characters that are compelling and interesting? What situations do you need to put those characters in to keep audiences engaged and coming back? This workshop takes participants through a series of character tools including: character diamonds, physics, character paradoxes, deepest dreads, and more.
Alex Burger is an award-winning screenwriter and playwright currently on contract with ABC to develop a new television drama. He is known for his work in South Africa head-writing seasons 3 and 4?of?the SAFTA-winning Umlilo (2016). He also wrote on the South African television shows Doubt (2016), 90 Plein Street Season 5 (2016), Hard Copy Season 4 (2016) and Isithembiso (2017-2018). He is currently writing a feature film to be shot in South Africa in 2018. He recently moved to Los Angeles and has a number of other projects in development.
