Writing for the Screen: Plot & Dialogue: A Workshop with Alex Burger

SEE EVENT DETAILS
This workshop meets on Sunday, September 9th, 2018, 10am-5pm (Plot) and Sunday, September 16th, 2018, 10am-5pm (Dialogue). Single day registration available.
Screenwriting is the art form of the moment as fresh stories explode on our TVs, in cinemas, and online. Join this new wave of story-making and quickly learn how to go deeply into immersive worlds and stories that are character-driven, richly imagined, and socially relevant.
Part One – Plot
How do great writers keep us on the edge of our seats? How do they find ways to reveal and challenge the characters that we come to know and love? This workshop focuses on crafting the best action and plot to keep your story moving forward by revealing the underlying structure of masterfully crafted film and television shows, giving you the tools to see how such shows were put together, and most importantly how to construct your own.
This workshop teaches the skills of three act structure, character journeys, story plotting, and sequence plotting through a mixture of lecture, discussion, examples from film and TV, and exercises. Participants leave with a clear view of how action is created and what action is needed to bring their story to life.
Part Two – Dialogue
Apart from the more macro issues of structure and plotting, stories are lived in the moment, in the second to second interactions that happen on screen. This workshop focuses on writing compelling scenes, dialogue, and unforgettable moments.
Alex Burger guides participants on a deep dive into what makes a scene, what makes great dialogue, and what makes a compelling and breathtaking moment. Join Alex to learn such tools as the seven-part scene structure, secrets to great dialogue, and moments that count through a mixture of lecture, discussion, examples from film and TV, and exercises. Leave with tools to write great scenes, dialogue, and memorable moments to captivate your audience.

Alex Burger is an award-winning screenwriter and playwright currently on contract with ABC to develop a new television drama.
