April brings an all-star edition of Writers With Drinks. We're seriously excited to bring you a profound mix of voices talking about feminism, displacement, families, and the outer limits of fantasy.

When: Saturday, April 14, 2018 from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM, doors open 6:30 PM
Who: Shobha Rao, Chelsey Johnson, Chiwan Choi, Javier Zamora, Dominica Phetteplace and Lilah Sturges
How much: $5 to $20, all proceeds benefit the Center for Sex & Culture, NOTAFLOF

About the readers/performers:

Shobha Rao is the winner of the Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Fiction, and her story “Kavitha and Mustafa” was chosen by T.C. Boyle for inclusion in Best American Short Stories 2015. She is the author of the short story collection, An Unrestored Woman, and the novel, Girls Burn Brighter.

Chelsey Johnson is the author of the novel Stray City, as well as many short stories that have appeared in places such as One Story, Ploughshares, and NPR’s Selected Shorts. An alum of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and the Stegner Fellowship, she’s currently an assistant professor of English at the College of William & Mary.

Javier Zamora was born in El Salvador and migrated to the US when he was nine. He is a Wallace Stegner Fellow and holds fellowships from CantoMundo, Colgate University, the Lannan Foundation, MacDowell, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation, and Yaddo. Chiwan Choi is the author of the book-length poem The Yellow House, plus two collections, The Flood and Abductions. His work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Entropy, Spiral Orb and others. He also wrote, presented, and destroyed the novel Ghostmaker throughout the course of 2015. He is a partner at Writ Large Press, a Los Angeles based indie publisher, focused on using literary arts to resist, disrupt, and transgress.

Lilah Sturges is an Eisner and Ignatz Award-nominated writer whose works include comics such as Jack of Fables, House of Mystery, Thor: Season One, and Justice Society of America, as well as a pair of fantasy novels and a few short stories. She is secretly a rock star. She lives in Austin, Texas with her two daughters and a cat named Greg.

Dominica Phetteplace is a math tutor who writes fiction and poetry. Her work has appeared in Asimov's, Analog, F&SF, Clarkesworld, Zyzzyva, The Pushcart Prize Anthology and The Year's Best Science Fiction & Fantasy. She is a MacDowell Fellow and a Rona Jaffe Awardee.

Writers With Drinks has won numerous "Best ofs" from local newspapers, and has been mentioned in 7x7, Spin Magazine and one of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City novels. The spoken word "variety show" mixes genres to raise money for local causes. The award-winning show includes poetry, stand-up comedy, science fiction, fantasy, romance, mystery, literary fiction, erotica, memoir, zines and blogs in a freewheeling format.
