May 11 & 12, 8pm
Come see the World Premier of The Caroline Liviakis Dance Company's debut evening-length work: There's A New Kid In Town! This will serve as a formal introduction of Liviakis' unique movement and performance aesthetic and philosophy to San Francisco and the greater Bay Area community.
The evening presents the world premier of five works including: "Welcome To My Runway", "Mr. Sexy's Past-My Sdeduction Future", "Balls Deep", "Alternative Chick", and "I/m Somewhere" along with adaptations to 3 works previously shown in-progress: "Your Face In Mine", "INeasyOUTbreezy", "Thuper Therious Dance", and the company staple: "effing-werkit-bebe".
The pieces take on the topic of commercialism both in exploring its theme in pop culture and in utilizing its dance forms. The commercial styles of hip hop, jazz, and musical theater are intertwined and placed in juxtaposition against the concert styles of contemporary, modern, and ballet while elements of Irish Step Dance, African Dance, and ballroom styles are sprinkled in. Makeup advertisements, fashion shows, dance battles, competition dance conventions, modern dance tropes, and music video cliches served as the primary inspiration.
The evening features multimedia projections shot by company cinematographer Gavin Impett. These projections feature mostly FaceDances: choreographed movement comprised entirely of facial movements. Most of the songs for the show are original compositions by Liviakis' younger brother, Thomas Liviakis. The electronic music score utilizes an eclectic range of styles rarely used in concert dance including: hip hop, electrohouse, pop, disco, and EDM.
The evening features a cast of twelve dancers including Rachel Epling, Ashley Johnson, Sydney Lozier, Twyla Malchow-Hay, Nikki Mische, Reanne Rasmusson, Korea Venters, Jena Wijitman, and Jenna Wilson Caroline Liviakis herself will also be performing alongside her two sisters, Audrey and Katherine Liviakis.
