'Women in Magic,' is a panel discussion with performances featuring award-winning bay area masters of legerdemain: Heather Rogers, Meriam Al Sultan, Paula Ramsey, Cynthia Yee and a special guest Carisa Hendrix from Calgary, Canada; moderated by Dagmar Theison. Presented by the Oakland Magic Circle in collaboration with AAUW.
There have historically been few female magicians and therefore few role models in the craft. Most women have been relegated to being assistants, often in skimpy costumes and the "victim" of torture effects. How many women have sawed a man in half?
But there have been some great performers as early as Adelaide Herrmann in the late 1890s. Recently more are appearing on the scene.
And San Francisco is home to some of the best who will share their journeys to success in a traditionally male-dominated art and perform some of their favorite magic.
Hear about Meriam breaking the Saudi rules against women performing magic; Heather performing at President Obama's Inaugural Ball and how magic led to her successful motivational workshops; Cynthia using magic to build her businesses including Chinatown Ghost Tours; Paula's career as a professional who now is dedicated to teaching children the art; and how and why Carisa develops a range of acts for everyone from kids to sophisticated audiences.
