The Jewish Film Institute (JFI) presents its tenth annual WinterFest, a showcase of nine local and international documentaries and narrative films that spotlight timely issues of culture, community, and identity in the Jewish world and beyond. The two-day festival features a dynamic program of critically acclaimed international films, timely local documentaries, and vibrant filmmaker conversations. WinterFest 2023 takes place February 25-26, 2023 at the Vogue Theater in San Francisco. On Saturday, February 25 Bay Area-based filmmaker Kate Schermerhorn is expected to attend the Bay Area premiere of Do I Need This?, which calls attention to America's obsession with over-consumption. The film is preceded by the ITVS-produced short film Brother by Joanna Rudnick (a 2021 JFI Filmmaker in Residence), about her family's experience with the opioid crisis. Joanna Rudnick is also expected to attend. The screening begins at 12pm at the Vogue Theater in San Francisco.

On Sunday, February 26 JFI hosts a panel discussion on issues of race, national memory, and antisemitism following Steve Pressman's documentary The Levys of Monticello, which uncovers the hidden history of the Jewish family that bought and preserved Thomas Jefferson's famous residence, a slave plantation. Panelists include director Steve Pressman, Professor Marc Dollinger, and Professor Margalynne Armstrong. The screening begins at 2:10pm at the Vogue Theater in San Francisco.

WinterFest also presents an impressive slate of international awards contenders, including A House Made of Splinters, which was just nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Other international highlights include French narrative feature Other People's Children, Israeli documentary The Camera of Dr Morris, and Ukrainian narrative feature SHTTL.
