Where Science and Politics Meet: Treating Substance Use Disorders

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Join Dr. Paul Linde, Clinical Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the UCSF School of Medicine, for an engaging dialogue on harm reduction and innovative methods to approach addiction treatment in San Francisco.

As the need for addiction treatment services in San Francisco grows more urgent - and more politicized - Dr. Linde draws upon decades of experience in the psych ER of San Francisco General Hospital to provide nuanced and compassionate responses to addiction. The discussion will shed light on the differences between abstinence and harm reduction treatment methods while dispelling popular media fallacies that these methods are mutually exclusive. Dr. Linde approaches care with the belief that public health policy regarding addiction treatment should ultimately be led by experts in public health care.

Dr. Paul Linde is a board-certified general adult psychiatrist with more than 30 years of clinical experience, with a focus on helping those with substance use disorders. He is the Medical Director for Psychiatry and Collaborative Care at Ria Health and a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the UCSF School of Medicine. He is the author of Danger to Self: On the Front Line With an ER Psychiatrist and Of Spirits and Madness: An American Psychiatrist in Africa, as well as creator and host of a podcast entitled "Hippie Docs 2.0: Re-Humanizing Medicine."
